People from foreign countries get permission to visit the US through visa application and approval process.   The immigrant visas are for the persons who want to stay in United State and get employed while non-immigrant visas are meant for tourists, business people and the students, in other words, are temporary visas.  Citizens from developed countries who are economically and politically stable are allowed to travel to United State for 90 days without obtaining a visa.  The visa waiver program is used for people coming for vocation and it is available to citizens of 37 countries.  The visa waiver bans the foreign citizens from working, going to school or applying for any permanent status.  When applying for immigration, the person is required to give various detailed applications to the Federal government.  The immigration regulation keeps changing, it is hard for a person to stay without formal training.
